Syntagma Square is the meeting point of the Athenians and the heart of the modern city. In 1843, crowds of people protested for the bestowal of a Constitution (Syntagma) to the Greek nation, with which Greek King Otto was forced to go along, hence the name of the square. In the upper part of the square stands the neoclassical building, in which the Greek Parliament is housed, built as a royal residence during 1836-1847 based on the designs of the Bavarian architect Gärtner. As a palace, it hosted the royal families until 1922, and, since 1935, it houses the Greek Parliament. In front of the Parliament, at VasilissisSofias Street stands the monument of the Unknown Soldier sculpted by FokionRok, while the composition of the bolection was made by K. Dimitriadis. It is a tribute to the Fallen of wars and is guarded throughout the day by the soldiers of the Presidential Guard, Evzones. They stand still dressed in the traditional costume of Tsolias and the change of guard takes place with a special ritual every hour.
