Over the last years Arachova has become one of the most popular winter destinations. The short distance from Parnassos Ski Center, the picturesque stone houses and the variety of options concerning accommodation and food justify why it is one of the top choices for travelers. Arachova owes a significant part of its development to the nearby archaeological site of Delphi and the ski center of Parnassos which is also located nearby.
It is a place with rich history; the ancient buildings date back to1200 BC, continuing to the years of the Byzantine Empire, the Greek War of Independence and the German occupation. The modern-day village was built in 1300 AD and in two centuries it was characterized as a village with increased population. In 1728 the bishop of Athens Meletios called Arachova the most important town of Parnassos. In 1802 it was burnt down by the Turks, but in 1826 the Greeks won in the famous Battle of Arachova spreading hope to the Greek War of Independence.
Today you will see the renovated traditional buildings that serve as guesthouses, the clock, the memorial of Karaiskakis and you will go up the stairs leading to the church of Agios Georgios to enjoy the view. The local recipes and the livestock products, the Greek cheese “formaela” being the most important one, will certainly enrich your visit. If you visit it during winter, where the snow adorns the area and Arachova is full of visitors, you will understand why it has been given the designation cosmopolitan!
