It could be characterized as the first trading center of antiquity and is a remnant of the Roman period of the city. After the request of the Athenians and with the donations of Julius Caesar and Augustus, the Roman Agora was built in 19-11 BC, which, although it was independent from the Ancient Agora, was created in a same structure combining the Roman architecture with the Greek, classical tradition. The columns at the entrance of the archaeological site were once the Gate of Athena Archegetis, whereas moving in the market you will see a drinking fountain with a cistern on its back, the Agoranomio (or Sebastio since, according to the inscription on its front "to the Respected gods", the space was intended for the imperial worship), the Vespasianes (public toilets of the era) and the most important building of the place, the Tower of the Winds or the Clock Tower of Kyristos. The Winds, the name by which is today known the monument, is an octagonal tower made of pentelic marble, with sides of 3,20m in length. On the top of the conical roof, a brass wind-vane in the form of a Triton pointed the direction of the winds, which are depicted embossed in the upper part of each side, personified and holding their symbols.Their names are engraved below the cornice:BOREAS, KAIKIAS, APILIOTIS, EVROS, NOTOS, LIPS, ZEFYROS and SKIRON.Below each wind there are engraved beams in various formations sharing a sundial. It was most likely constructed around 47 BC by the astronomer Andronicos from Kyrros of Macedonia.Apart from being a clock tower, the Tower of the Winds seem to have been some kind of weather station evoking public admiration back then as well as till our days, as an achievement of science.
