The Ancient Agora of Thessaloniki, one of the most impressive archaeological sites of the city, is located between Filippou, Olympou, Agnostou Stratioti and Gkarmbola Streets. It was built in the 2nd-3rd century AD, as the administrative and commercial center of the city, took a fall during the 7th century and was inhabited again by the Sephardi Jews, who came from Spain in the late 15th century. Moreover, it was revealed in 1962 after excavations. It is worth mentioning that the embossed pillars from the arcades of the Ancient Agora are kept in the Louvre Museum, where they ended in 1864 after the initiative of the French paleographer Miller and with permission by the Turkish authorities. And if once the heart of the city was located in the Ancient Agora, today it is a relatively deprived area of the center, which is reanimated during the days of industrial mobilization. The agora acquires its old glory occasionally in the summer, within the framework of cultural events held in the amphitheater in its eastern part.
