The well-known lagoon of the Straits of Lefkada, which is part of the Amvrakikos wetlands, is a wetland of international importance and is therefore protected by the RAMSAR international treaty and is the favorite destination for the locals to go for a walk or cycling. The lagoon is integrated into the NATURA 2000 network as a landscape of particular natural beauty, and is one of the largest wetlands in Greece. This beautiful landscape hosts many species of fauna, including ducks, pelicans, herons, gulls, etc. Also, the lagoon has a rich flora, as you will find heathers, pine trees, armythirs, figs (something very unusual), sparta etc. Finally, the place is a well-known migrant refuge for many birds during the winter, such as swans who prefer the mild climate that prevails. Note that here takes place every time the green Half Marathon of Lefkada.
