At the entrance of Lefkada, near Ammoglossa, stands the impressive castle of Agia Mavra. From the first decade of the 14th century to 1684 it protected the capital of the island and constituted its defense against pirates and other enemies. Inside the Frankish castle is also the chapel of Agia Mavra which is celebrated every 3rd of May.
