They are organic, award-winning and travel from Naxos Island to the whole world. You can tell them apart by their elegant, colorful and comely packaging. These notable products are produced by Organic Islands Company with its head office on Naxos island, Cyclades. This rapidly developing family business runs in the field of production and processing of organic-natural aromatic and pharmaceutical plants and herbs. From 2010, when Nikos Chatziandreu and his family moved to Sangri village on Naxos and cultivated plants in the first 12000 m² of land, until now, certified herbs travel faraway around the world, including Australia. The main principles behind  Organic Islands have turned into reality, biological cultivation practices (Organic) are spread and Cyclades island group (Islands) cooperate in order to produce high quality herbal products. The vision of Organic Islands is that through this synergy the dynamic of the idea will grow on both regional-touristic and international markets, which can particularly contribute to the boost of individual regional economies in Greek insular areas.
Their experimental effort started long before recent aromatic plants’ cultivation buzz, it was based on individual research and ongoing tests on climate and dry conditions of Cyclades island group (little water, strong sun, special soil composition) and showed that the plants had been benefited from the climate. Nikos Chatziandreu has mentioned: “We are happy to announce that demand for our products is higher than our production capability.”
On the production process, Organic Islands cooperates with many local cultivators, who offer their knowledge and traditional techniques in order to provide us with a flawless result, boosting in another way local economy. “But there are rules”, highlighted Nikos: “and they concern the strict biological character of each crop, as well as the resemblance between the cultivated plants that is guaranteed by the same dry conditions applied on all ranches.”
However, experiments and tests didn’t end at this point. The company decided to deal with the traditional delight (lukumi) adding to it flavors from sage, pennyroyal, lavender and rosemary natural oils. To achieve this goal Organic Islands joined with Bariamis Sweets Company and dazzled the judges of Great Taste Awards. Pennyroyal herbal delight was awarded with three stars, prize that was given only to 125 products out of 10,000 competition entries. And the judges also gave another two stars to Organic Islands for rosemary herbal delight and hyssop tea! Nikos Chatziandreu, pleased with the award, stated that the award in such a named contest will help them enter international markets, especially the British one, which recognizes the institution and all the award-winning products.
