Zakynthos and Ulysses: Homer, who mentions Zakynthos as Yliessa which means wooded, tells us that one of the first inhabitants of the island was Zakynthos, son of Dardanus, the King of Frigia, between 1500 and 1600 BC. Then came the Kingdom of Ulysses, but after his return from Troy and the murder of the suitors of whom twenty were from Zakynthos, Zakynthos rebelled and won their island back from the Kingdom. This myth recounted in Homer's Odyssey represents a real revolt that took place in the Ionian Islands and resulted in the right to democratic governance.
