The church of the Dormition of the Theotokos is a remarkable specimen of monumental architecture located in Chora. It is an imposing building with a wooden roof that falls within the category of the Basilica churches. Moreover, in its interior you will see very old icons, and the head relics of the five Neo-martyrs of Samothrace: Manuel, Georgios, Michael, Theodore and Georgios. The five Samothracians were captured by the Turks in 1821 and were forced to convert to Muslim; but when they returned in their hometown, they avouched their belief in Christ provoking the wrath of the Turks, who tortured them to death. The church was built in 1857 and was inaugurated in 1875.
