Two testaments to the glorious past of Kefalonia during the Mycenaean period are the burial grounds at Mazarakata and Lakithra, and the imposing vaulted tomb in the area Tzannata near Poros. The first cluster of graves is the largest of its kind, including 16 tomb chambers and 83 tombs. From the second come most of the artifacts that adorn the Archaeological Museum of Argostoli, the site having been discovered unmolested in the early 20th century. The two burial grounds are situated on the road to the village Pessada, south of Argostoli, and worth visiting not only for their historical value, but also for the overall atmosphere that surrounds them: ghosts of Homer's Odyssey seem to come alive carved in their rock tombs, while their labyrinthine lanes give an exciting note of archeology and mystery. It should be noted that since 2007, efforts have been made to upgrade and promote these sites, in order both to conserve these holy places, and also to make them more accessible to visitors.
The sole tholos (vaulted) tomb at Tzannata is located on the country road from Argostoli to Poros, and is accessible by car.
Opening hours: 8:00 to 15:00 every day except Monday.
Admission is free.
