The house of Mehmet Ali is located in the old town and is a shining example of the 18th century Ottoman architecture. It meets all the conditions to be considered as a typical ottoman house, with separate rooms for men and women, a harem and a Turkish bath (hammam), large rooms and a garden in which lies a part of the grave of Mehmet Ali’s mother. Mehmet Ali was born in Kavala. In the Mehmet Ali square lies a statue of him on a horse from 1949.
The imposing lighthouse lies on the edge of the old town, guiding ships and attracting the attention of thousands of foreign visitors and locals. Its current structure is ought to reconstructions that took place during the period 1929-1945. Under the lighthouse you will find the magnificent Vrachakia tis Panagias beach where you can relax and enjoy the sea, the sunset and the beautiful moonlight. In the past, the lighthouse was a place of entertainment, where various events including dancing or eating were organized. Today, it is a perfect place to relax and have a walk with your friends or your other half. The lighthouse itself is not open to public due to works in progress. But if you want to say that you have visited the city of Kavala you should not forget to go near this place as well as at the square and the beach that lies down the lighthouse.
